South Africa based institute says concrete should be the first choice of material for all kinds of roads.
{reg}The South African Cement and Concrete Institute has called for the adoption of concrete as the material of choice for roads, from highways to low-volume roads. The institute says concrete roads are a green and sustainable choice due to their long service lives which can run into decades without need for significant maintenance.
An article by Engineering News reports that the longevity of concrete roads eliminates the need for frequent pavement resurfacing and rehabilitation, as well as the consumption of valuable resources. The institute says the cost of concrete roads can further be reduced by using additives like fly ash and ground granulated blast furnace slag.
Concrete roads are also labor friendly as the skill sets needed to build concrete roads can be adapted for other construction activities.{/reg]
